The Fall Guy: Release Date, Trailer And Other Things We Know About Ryan Gosling And Emily Blunt’s New Movie
A classic '80s action TV show is receiving the big-screen treatment!
In a few months, Ryan Gosling will star in a movie about a Hollywood stuntman who finds himself in a mess of trouble in the City of Angels. Right off the bat, this sounds a whole lot like the 2011 neo-noir crime thriller, Drive, but this upcoming TV-to-film adaptation is something far different from what most consider one of Gosling’s best movies. The Fall Guy, which is also set to feature Emily Blunt in a leading role, is the longtime project of Bullet Train director David Leitch, one that will offer a new spin on a classic ‘80s action series.
If this is the first you’re hearing of The Fall Guy, don’t worry, because we’re about to shed some light on one of the early contenders for THE action movie of 2024. Below we will break down everything we know about the movie so far, including its release date, the players both in front of and behind the camera, a look at its trailer, and other details that will hopefully make you just as excited for this revamping of a classic Lee Majors action series.
What Is The Fall Guy Release Date?
It seems like we’ve been hearing about The Fall Guy for years, but we don’t have to wait all that much longer, as Ryan Gosling’s upcoming action comedy is set for a May 3rd release. The movie was originally slated to open on March 1st, but it, like many other films, was pushed back in November 2023 following the conclusion of the SAG-AFTRA strike, per Deadline.
The Fall Guy will also kick off what could be a very busy May at the box office, considering we’ll see long-awaited films like George Miller’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, and The Garfield movie, to name a few.
The Fall Guy Trailer Brings The Action, Comedy, And Hints At Romance
In November 2023, Universal Pictures gave the world a proper look at what looks to be a hilarious and thrilling action comedy with the release of the first trailer for The Fall Guy. This three-minute epic video introduces all the major characters, their motivations, and the wild and wacky story at the center of this highly-anticipated flick, and that’s just in the first half of it.
If the action, comedy, and hints at romance between Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt’s characters end up being half as great as they look in the trailer, we could very well be looking at the latest addition to a long list of iconic action comedies. May cannot come soon enough.
Ryan Gosling And Emily Blunt Lead The Fall Guy Cast
Sitting atop The Fall Guy cast are Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, but those two big-time Hollywood A-listers are just a part of the talented group of actors set to appear in David Leitch’s upcoming action comedy.
Ryan Gosling (Colt Seavers)
Universal Pictures has revealed that Ryan Gosling will take on the role of Colt Seavers, the down-on-his-luck former stuntman at the center of The Fall Guy. The part will hopefully further show off Gosling’s comedic timing from movies like Barbie and The Nice Guys with the action skills seen in Drive and Blade Runner 2049.
Emily Blunt (Jody Moreno)
Emily Blunt shows up in The Fall Guy as Jody Moreno, Gosling’s director, and former fling who calls upon him to help when her star actor goes missing. The Oppenheimer star has excelled at comedies in the past, including the legendary The Devil Wears Prada.
Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Tom Ryder)
Aaron Taylor-Johnson has been on a roll as of late, and it looks like that’ll continue when he takes on the role of Tom Ryder, the missing actor at the center of The Fall Guy’s mystery. The movie will also see the Kraven the Hunter star team up with David Leitch again after working with him on Bullet Train.
Hannah Waddingham
Ted Lasso standout star Hannah Waddingham is going to show up in The Fall Guy as a producer who’ll go to great lengths to prevent the studio from finding out that the star is missing.
Winston Duke
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever actor Winston Duke is another member of the remarkable The Fall Guy cast. In addition to playing the hilarious and strong M’Baku in the MCU, Duke has also popped up in films like Us and Spenser Confidential.
Stephanie Tsu
Stephanie Tsu has been on a nice film run since Everything Everywhere All at Once, and that will continue when she shows up in The Fall Guy. Tsu appeared in the 2023 comedies Joy Ride and Shortcomings.
The Fall Guy Follows A Past-His-Prime Stuntman As He Steps In For A Missing Actor
Instead of focusing on a stuntman who has a side hustle as a bounty hunter in Los Angeles like in the original The Fall Guy TV show, the movie will be taking a different approach to the story. According to The Hollywood Reporter. David Leitch’s upcoming adaptation will instead see Gosling’s Colt as a past-his-prime stunt driver who essentially becomes a private investigator when he is tasked with tracking down Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s missing leading man.
David Leitch Directed The Fall Guy, Which Was Penned By Hobbs And Shaw Writer Drew Pearce
Ever since co-directing John Wick with Chad Stahelski a decade ago, David Leitch has established himself as one of the best filmmakers in the action movie realm thanks to hits like Atomic Blonde, Deadpool 2, Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, and Bullet Train. And, that run of inventive, and hard-hitting feature films will continue with The Fall Guy, a movie that saw him re-team with Drew Pearce, the screenwriter who helped dream up some of those insane moments in the 2019 Fast & Furious spinoff film.
In addition to writing Hobbs and Shaw, Pearce’s body of work includes Iron Man 3, Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation, and Hotel Artemis, the latter of which he also directed. Pearce also wrote and directed the 2014 short film, Marvel One-Shot: All Hail the King.
David Leitch Is Incorporating His Own Experiences On Film Sets Into The Fall Guy
Before stepping in the director’s chair for movies like John Wick (though he’s uncredited) David Leitch had a long and storied career as one of Hollywood’s premier stuntmen. Over the years, Leitch performed stunts in everything from Fight Club to Daredevil, and XXX: State of the Union to X-Men Origins: Wolverine, gaining invaluable experience in the process. When talking about The Fall Guy in an August 2022 interview with Collider, Leitch revealed that drew from those experiences, as well as those of his fellow producers:
In another Collider interview later in 2022, producer Kelly McCormick revealed that the movie will feature a ton of practical stunts, with some of them being “100% practical” and without the need for CGI, which has us even more excited for what’s to come.
What Is The Fall Guy’s MPA Rating?
In case you were wondering, the MPA has given The Fall Guy a PG-13 rating, meaning you can bring most, if not all, of the family to check out David Leitch’s most recent action comedy. According to FilmRatings.com, the movie features action and violence, drug content, and some strong language.
How Long Is The Fall Guy Runtime?
Another thing that seems to always come up when talking about an upcoming movie is the film’s runtime. It sounds like The Fall Guy won’t be too long or too short with a runtime of 125 minutes, or a little over two hours, according to the SXSW 2024 Film Festival program, which is where the new Ryan Gosling movie is set to premiere in March.
Well, all we can do now is wait for The Fall Guy to open on the big screen this May. Expect to hear more about the film as we get closer to its release, as well as all the other releases on the 2024 movie schedule.
